Order of Selichos in Polish Rite Printed by Shapira Press. Slavita, 1827

Order of Selichos for the month of Elul and the High Holy Days, following the customs and rites of Polish Jewry.

This book was printed by the illustrious Admor Harav Moshe Shapira of Slavita.

Harav Moshe Shapira was the son of the legendary Admor Harav Pinchas of Koritz. Harav Moshe refused to accept the title of Rav or Rebbe and instead founded a printing press in his hometown of Slavita where he published many famous sifrei kodesh while maintaining uncompromising standards of excellence. Chassidic leaders of his generation were effusive in their praises of the Slavita Press and often sought out these sefarim which were printed by righteous and pious tzaddikim.

Slavita, 1827. 107 leaves. Page size: 20.5 cm. Book title and printing city in red ink. Medium-size hole in last three pages; minor stains. New leather binding.

Selichos – Shapira Press

“He should accustom himself to learn from a sefer that was printed by G-d-fearing men”. A story is told of one of the great tzaddikim who arrived in a place during the days of Selichos. The [townspeople] gave him a book of Selichos [to recite the prayers], yet he replied that he could not see the letters…until they gave him the Selichos printed by G-d-fearing Jews, presumably the Slavita edition, and he said that now he could see the letters.

“Therefore, one should strive to purchase seforim printed by G-d-fearing men, and especially from the Slavita and Zhitomir Presses [owned] by the Admor of Koritz’s grandchildren, who were exalted printers.” (Taharas Hakodesh Ch. 6 by the Shomer Emunim)
