Paul described the day-to-day events in Mauthausen down to the smallest detail, including vivid descriptions of the faces of the prisoners who were with him, sentences and complete conversations he heard from camp commanders, and things he was told (such as at a German officer's transit station: "To the place you go, will never return, so no matter what you take with you"), as well as from the prisoners, difficult situations of day and night, how a 6-year-old child was forced to clean the exit corridor with both hands every day, the terrible humiliation the prisoners went through every day - guard dogs sent to prisoners, The firing squads, the exact number of bodies piled up in each pile, the forced labor in the snow and freezing cold, the severe hunger, and the daily torture. Paul, in his amazing memory describes every detail, and can be found in the book some pages describing only one day at camp, and including the occurrence over every hour and hour of the day.

The book serves to this day as a top informational source for the atrocities of Mauthausen.

The book contains hard to view photographs of prisoners who arrived at the camp and were taken by the Nazis before it was Released, as well as photographs of the survivors in their critical condition, and of the bodies of the victims taken in real time immediately after his release.

Paul Tillard [1914-1966] French journalist and writer. In April 1943, he was deported to the Mauthausen camp, after being in the Compiegne camp. Mauthausen was imprisoned for a year and upon his release in May 1945 began to write his testimony - his book "Mauthausen" is the most famous. To the book, an introduction by Jean-Richard Bloch emphasizing his importance as the first testimony from the man who 'spoke daily with the angels' during his imprisonment. He finished writing his chilling testimony within a few months, and in the same year the book was published.
