ROOSEVELT THEODORE: (1858-1919) American President 1901-09. T.L.S., Theodore Roosevelt, with an interesting six lines holograph post-script, as President, one page, small 4to, Washington, 23rd November 1908, to Lord Cromer, on the printed stationery of The White House. Roosevelt writes a letter of introduction for W. Cameron Forbes, explaining 'He is a Harvard man and an old friend of mine. Incidentally he is a grand-son of [American Poet Ralph Waldo] Emerson, but the reason I am giving him this note to you is that at present he is Vice-Governor of the Philippines and will ultimately undoubtedly be Governor. He has been four years a member of the Commission in the Philippines, and has been a particularly valuable man there.' In concluding the President states that he will be in England in May 1910 to deliver the Romanes Lecture at Oxford and remarks 'As I have not been fortunate enough to get you to visit America while I have been President, at least I hope to see you while I am in England.' In a lengthy holograph postscript he further writes 'Mr. Forbe's father's father was a representative in London from President Lincoln, in the effort to stop the sailing of certain confederate ironclads; and was then thrown closely into contact with the then head of the Baring house, Mr. Thomas Baring.' With blank integral leaf. VG. £2000-3000
