Drawing of Rabbi Yosef Rosen, "The Rogatchover"
Charcoal picture of the great Rabbi Yosef Rosen, ztz"l, 1945.
39x50 cm. Possibly drawn over an old copy of the famed picture of the Rogatchover. Signed by an unidentified artist, dated 10.3.45.
Rabbi Yosef Rosen [1858-1936] was born in Rogatchov, by whose name he is known. In his youth, he studied under Rabbi Yosef Dov Ber Soloveitchik, author of the Beit HaLevi. For about forty years, he served as chassidic rabbi of Dvinsk, alongside Rabbi Meir Simchah HaKohen, author of Ohr Sameach. He was renowned for his awesome genius and unmatched phenomenal memory. He wrote short, concise Torah novellae. Before WWII, his daughter put forth monumental efforts to photocopy her father's manuscripts and send them to America. Over the years, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Kasher published some of the Torah thoughts that were photocopied.
Very fine condition, placed in an old frame.
