MARTÍ JOSÉ: (1853-1895) Cuban Poet, Writer and Revolutionary Philosopher. Martí is considered a national hero as well as a leading figure in Latin American literature. He became a symbol for Cuba's fight for independence in the 19th century, and is referred to as the ''Apostle of Cuban Independence''. An extremely interesting and rare A.L.S., José Martí, one page, folio, New York, 29th January 1895, on the New York Delegation of the Cuban Revolutionary Party printed stationery, in Spanish. The document being an internal communication statement to the revolutionary party. Martí states in part `All parts of Cuban society have to recognize the achievement of all Cubans who have died for them in the name of the homeland, two generations who have proved the unity and strength ´ further saying `The delegate of the Cuban Revolutionary party, created to bring order and help the ongoing war and the Chief General elected by all members of the Liberator Army.´ A letter of excellent content, being a statement by Martí from exile in favour of the Cuban independence. With remnants of a former red wax seal to the upper edge and verso. Also bearing to the verso a printed heading of the Delegation of the Cuban Revolutionary Party in New York. Overall minor age wear, very light foxing and a small area of paper loss to the upper right corner not affecting the text or signature. Folded. G £1000-1500 Martí returned to Cuba two months after the present letter was written, and was killed in battle against Spanish troops only a month after.
