STROESSNER ALFREDO: (1912-2006) President of Paraguay 1954-89. Stroessner leaded an army coup in 1954, and his 35 years rule is one of the longest worldwide and the longest in South America. He governed as a dictator, keeping the country and civil liberties under a permanent state of siege, torturing and killing political opponents. In 1989 he was overthrown in a new military coup d´état.
