Important and Interesting Lengthy Halachic Responsum Handwritten and Signed by "Posek HaDor" the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach
Important and interesting lengthy halachic responsum about the use of hearing aids for the deaf on Shabbat by the adjudicator of the generation, the gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, to the gaon Rabbi Eliezer Yehudah Waldenberg, author of Tzitz Eliezer. Jerusalem, 1961. Signed autograph.
Before us is a lengthy halachic responsum covering four pages of characteristically dense writing. Both extremely important, and apparently one of the first in the field, from the halachic authority in these complex matters, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach. Rabbi Waldenberg considered forbidding the use of hearing aids on Shabbat, because the battery in them uses up the chemicals materials of which they are made, and there is a concern of igniting [מבעיר] and extinguishing [מכבה]. The gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman responds to him: "I was quite puzzled as to how [you] who understands these matters, could consider this igniting and extinguishing because chemical materials constantly get used up by the activation, as to whether this involves ignitingand extinguishing." Rabbi Shlomo Zalman demonstrates his great powers in understanding the operation of electronic devices of our times and deducing the serious halachahs of Shabbat from the mishnah and the gemara. At the top of the letter, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman blesses: "And I hereby bless that H' give [you] success ... and that Hash-m be with [you] ... in expansion and much satisfaction."
Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach [1910-1995] was the rosh yeshivah of Kol Torah and one of the leading halachic adjudicators of the recent generation. He earned the moniker "Posek HaDor" for his rulings which were unquestionably accepted by Jewish people of all circles. When he was only 24 years old, he published his book Meorei Esh which deals with electricity on Shabbat. Since then he has been considered the highest authority in issues of halachah and technology. He was famous for his modesty, his gentleness and his luminous countenance. Hundreds of thousands of people attended his funeral.
