The dictionary of I. I. Sreznevsky, published in 1893-1912 under the supervision of academicians A. F. Bychkov and A. A. Shakhmatov, collected a huge lexical material from both published and handwritten sources. It became a Treasury of language, which is what I. I. Sreznevsky dreamed of. The great scientific and practical value of the Dictionary of I. I. Sreznevsky can be judged by the fact that the total number of its sources, from which the dictionary materials are extracted, is more than two and a half thousand. All the main ancient Russian monuments (up to and including the XIV century) were almost completely used. To a large extent, later sources are also reflected.The dictionary has been in scientific circulation for almost a century and is an indispensable guide when reading ancient monuments and a reliable source when studying old Russian vocabulary.
