Shulman, Kalman (1819, Old Bykhov, Mogilev Province, - 1899, Vilna) - a Jewish writer and translator. He wrote in Hebrew.
In his youth he studied in yeshivas of Lithuania, but, carried away by the ideas of Ѓaskala, he independently studied the Bible and German grammar.
In 1843 he settled in Vilna), earned by educating children in wealthy families. In Vilna, Shulman entered the maskilim circle, became friends with M. I. Lebenson.
In 1848, his first Hebrew book, Safa Brura (Clear Language), was published, containing mainly literary translations from German. In 1849–61 Shulman taught Hebrew literature at the rabbinical seminary in Vilna.
After leaving teaching, Shulman took up literary activity, mainly translations and literary processing. He concluded an agreement with the famous Vilm publishing house of the Romm family, for his work he received a meager pay.
Shulman set the task of spreading the ideas of Ѓaskala to a wide audience, but he did it carefully, without pressure, so that even orthodox religious circles showed interest in his books, which were repeatedly reprinted. His literary work contributed to an increase in the number of Hebrew readers.
In particular, Shulman in 1857-60. translated the 10-volume adventure novel by the French writer Eugene Sue, “Paris Secrets”, and this was the first translation of modern literature into Hebrew. The translation caused irritation among the conservative part of Jewish readers, who considered that the life of the Parisian criminal world should not be stated in the holy language, and Shulman no longer made such attempts, devoting himself entirely to scientific translations.
In 1868–84 The 9-volume edition of Divrey Imei Olam (World History) was published, based on the works of German historians, mainly George Weber. The publication was carried out at the initiative of the Society for the dissemination of education between Jews in Russia. The publication of the Judean War in 1861 in a free translation of Shulman from German into Hebrew was the first edition of Josephus in Hebrew in modern times.
