TOWNES CHARLES H.: (1915-2015) American Physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1964. A large 4to printed souvenir reproduction of the famous Einstein-Szilard letter of August 1939 to American President Franklin D. Roosevelt, warning him that Germany may develop atomic bombs and suggesting that the United States should commence its own nuclear programme, signed by Townes in blue ink with his name alone to a clear area at the head of the first page. Also bearing a United States postage stamp featuring a portrait of Einstein and postmarked at Princeton, New Jersey, 14th March 1966. VG During World War II Townes worked on radar bombing systems at Bell Labs.
