Discharge books (or discharges) are books of records of orders for military, civil, and court service. According to the publishers, they appeared during the time of Ivan III and continued until the new institutions of Peter I – thus, they made a complete chronicle of government and official activities in Russia during the Moscow period of Russian history. "Palace ranks" – books that relate almost exclusively to orders for the court service and in General to the actions of the Royal court.
