The main part of the book presents the diary entries of the pilot Babushkin, telling about his experience of Arctic flights on the plane "Yu-13". The book describes the Arctic summer, weather features, impressions of the polar day and its influence on the perception of the time of day. The pilot describes the preparation of the expedition on the "Malygin", loading and strengthening the aircraft on the deck of the ship. It is told about the preparation of the aircraft for flight: its descent to the ice floe and Assembly. The author describes 15 ascents into the air made from drifting ice floes, as well as the process of changing the motor on the ice floe. The food supply is listed at the rate of three people for a week period. The conditions of life of pilots on an ice floe for 4.5 days are described.
